Which of the following foods would fight diabetes?
- a. Milk
b. Carbonated beverages
c. Herbal tea - a. Idaho potatoes
b. Red potatoes
c. Mashed potatoes - a. Romaine lettuce
b. Tomatoes
c. Avocado
ANSWERS:
- Milk is high in protein and also contains calcium and other vitamins and minerals. However, for some diabetics, milk can cause blood sugar fluctuations, although scientists don’t exactly know why this occurs. If you are a Type 2 diabetic that experiences this reaction, eliminate dairy products from your diet. Of course you would know this by your daily blood sugar readings.
Carbonated beverages have little nutrition in them. Herbal tea is your best choice. Herbal teas contain plenty of polyphenols, phytonutrients and other compounds considered good for the body. They also may contain constituents that will help you with blood sugar regulation.
- Potatoes are always a challenge for any diabetic. Many older Type 2 diabetics cherish the good old days when they ate a steak and big baked potato. The potato has changed along with the times. Now potatoes are found to have a high glycemic index, sometimes up to 98! This is instant blood sugar disaster for diabetics. Stay away from mashed potatoes or traditional baked potatoes. Go for the red potatoes. These have less starch and are lower on the glycemic index.
- Romaine lettuce vs. tomatoes vs avocado.
The answer here is that all three of these foods are great for you for your diabetes. Eat them!
